Automotive systems generally use four types of fuses to protect circuits and components. Fuse types include Mini, Maxi, Standard, and Cartridge Fuses. A fuse test is usually one of the first steps performed when diagnosing an electrical problem. Measuring for voltage across each end of the fuse, with the key in the on position, is the most common method for initial fuse testing. A blown fuse will show voltage on one side and ground on the other. A continuity test should be performed to confirm the fuse is blown. Power Probe has several tools that can assist in this type of testing. The Power Probe III EZ is one example, which also includes a built-in tutorial for this type of test. The photos show the tool in action.
