The difference between the 2000 and 3000 is this. Unlike 2000, the 3000 has a variable sensitivity level that can be seen.

The ECT2000 is reset only one way and it is more guesswork than not. The sensitivity level can be applied to the distance between the signal and the base so setting 8 is 8+ inches, 6 is approximately 6 inches, 2 LED’s is 2 inches and the lowest setting is about 1 inch above the signal. The approximate area of a short on the ECT2000 is somewhere underneath the receiver and within the length of the body. The 3000 has an insignia on the bottom that says SHORT. This area is exactly where the trigger point is for shorts. This changes the accuracy from within 4 inches, the length from tip to base on the EC2000, to within .5 inches, the length of the insignia. Side to side is equal between the two and about .5 inches total. This means the ECT 2000 has an accuracy of a 6 x 4 x .5 from signal detect the location of the short.

The 3000 accuracy is .5 x .5 x .5 inches. If you are stopped right at the tone cutoff point and 4 lights are lit on the sense bar, the short will be 4 inches below the short insignia. Also, the wires are stacked in wiring harnesses it can really help.

There is a pointed tip to help dig into a wire bundle, it’s prettier and stays on for longer than 30 seconds to avoid continually requiring the signal. Also, it has improved accuracy in the tip for finding opens so it will trigger within .1 inches of the tip. That’s the deal!
